Reporting to the Data Governance Board, the Data Steward Council (DSC) is the core of data governance and includes representatives of business units (data stewards appointed by data trustees), data custodians (as designated by ITS) and campus end-users (to include OIEP and others designated by OIEP or self-selected with approval of supervisors).
- Data stewards are subject matter experts and provide expertise in both operational needs and data utilization. They ensure data is valid and fits for greater campus consumption. As a vital part of the MIDAS governance program, data stewards play a central role in operationalizing data governance principles across all domains. The responsibilities of the data stewards include, but are not limited to the following key functions:

- Metadata and lineage documentation

- Draft policies and compliance enforcement

- Collaboration and change management

- Data literacy and advocacy
- Data custodians provide guidance and promote appropriate use aligned with approved data policies, quality standards, and security and access protocols.
- End-users inform the council on how data elements are used outside of the business operations that create the data, e.g. analytics, reporting, etc. End-users also provide guidance on definition and campus data needs.
Together, the DSC is charged with:

- Conduct root cause analyses of data quality issues.

- Initial drafting of policies, standards, and guidelines.
- Collaborating with dedicated working groups when specific issues arise.
- Identifying and documenting the metadata in the data glossary.
