  • New Student Evaluation of Teaching (SET) Questions (2/9/2022)

The Faculty Senate has approved new questions for student evaluations of teaching to be used starting this spring. While the SET process is administered by OIEP using the online software Blue, the instrument is developed and approved by the Faculty Senate. Read the full statement sent to faculty from the Faculty Senate, Effective Teaching Committee, and Stearns Center for Teaching and Learning.

In addition to the new standard questions, there are three optional pre-written questions that faculty can add to their evaluations which address the use of technology. Faculty are also still able to add up to 5 customized question in Blue.

  • Angela Detlev Retires (2/1/2022)

After more than 13 years at Mason, Angela Detlev retired on February 1, 2022.

As you all know, Angela is a wealth of knowledge having brought to Mason years of experience, not the least of which was insider knowledge of SCHEV.  She is known for  the veracity of her work, her diligence to her craft, her kindness to those with whom she works and her ability to question, hone and refine to produce what can only be described as exceptional work.  The work of OIEP requires clearing away the clutter, getting down to business and sometimes questioning and probing to ensure the question being asked will lead to the data and information required.  Angela did that work with aplomb.

Angela starts her next adventure as an international jet-setter, enjoying her family unencumbered by IPEDS and SCHEV reports, surveys and the ever-present ad-hoc requests.  As per her request (and given current pandemic related dynamics) there was no grand formal sendoff which she so richly deserved.

  • Student Evaluations of Teaching Updates – February 2021 (2/3/2021)

Results for the Fall 2020 student evaluations of teaching were recently shared with instructors and supervisors. Unlike in other terms, however, these results will not be posted on the Office of Institutional Effectiveness and Planning (OIEP) website. The pandemic which led to the subsequent delivery of a significant amount of instruction in an online format set these evaluations apart. Overall, the response rate for the institution was 34.3% with a range across the schools/colleges of 28.2% to 42.8%. Response rates are affected by a variety of factors but courses delivered in an online format typically do have lower rates. To that end, instructors are encouraged, if possible, to schedule evaluation time in the course during instruction time. While this will not work in asynchronous courses, this method can be deployed for both face-to-face and synchronous instruction. Instructors can monitor response rates in real time.

Feedback from the Fall 2020 administration has prompted a change for the Spring 2021 administration.   Designated supervisors, (deans, department chairs/program directors, and (department) scheduling coordinators) will be able to make individual course date changes at the request of instructors should instructors choose not to use the default Spring 2021 Administration Schedule.  Requests should be made directly from the instructor to the supervisor in their unit.

  • Annual Assessment Reporting Deadline in Tk20 – June 1, 2021 (1/19/2021)

This year’s annual assessment reporting deadline for all academic and administrative units is June 1, 2021. The deadline has been been moved up for the 2020-21 academic year to allow time to incorporate the data into Mason’s SACSCOC compliance certification report.

  • New Associate Director (1/12/2021)

We are pleased to welcome our new Associate Director – Lisa Anh Nguyen – to the OIEP team.

Lisa will be providing streamlined research to support planning and decision-making efforts across Mason. This includes supporting accreditation and mandated reporting.
